Commercial & Business Skills
NHS organisations of all sorts are being driven to adopt increasingly rigorous business processes. NHS Elect’s Business Skills and Commissioning programme supports this aim through a mixture of training, organisational development and hands on project support.
Our learning and development programme focuses on three areas:
- Core commercial skills
- Commissioning
- Procurement skills overview
Specialist areas of interest for the year are:
- Partnerships, joint ventures, social enterprise and contract law
- Patient satisfaction and contract performance
- Systems management and competition law
In addition to this we have delivered a number of bespoke projects on member sites. These were designed to meet special organisational needs while supporting skills and knowledge transfer with local teams. The list below includes some of these as examples:
- Developing clinical coding guides and guidance to promoting good coding practice
- Business case development
- Business planning design
- Partnership strategy and facilitation
- Procurement process review
- Market management strategy
- Private patient review
- Development of urgent care center and GP partnership bids
- Management strategy for GP consortia
- Writing tender documents
- Responding to tenders
- Market assessment and procurement options decision tree

Divisional Manager for Medicine
Scarborough General Hospital
"During a period of radical and constant change within our Acute Trust at Executive Level and with the imminent acquisition by York Foundation Trust, the NHS Elect Team have been able to offer a group of Senior Managers within the Trust, a bespoke training package to address some knowledge and development gaps. The programme has benefited the group of Senior Managers not only with education and training but also allowed us time set aside to work together with NHS Elect outside of the Hospital environment which has been invaluable and often difficult to achieve within each other's busy working day.
The team have an extensive range of experience from which we were able to adapt a programme to suit our needs and have been extremely fleixlbe with regard to scheduling".
